Kentucky Derby Diamond Ratings

At Indiana Downs on Monday, May 10, the Diamond System picked this COLD $251.00 Exacta which we had as a Boxcar Longshot on the free picks
page at www.longshotwinners.com. Notice that the horse has the L notation which is Trackmaster's longshot mark.

At Prairie Meadows on Monday, April 26, Debop won the 5th race and was top rated on option P, which is very good for big longshots.
Again, notice that this horse has the best Diamond Pace (78) and a big 11 point pace advantage in a sprint. He paid $92.40.

On Sunday, April 25 at Hollywood, in the last race, Carbon Hoofprint won and paid $62.40. Again, notice that this horse has a 56 Diamond Pace
rating, a 7 point advantage, which is what I've always recommended looking for in sprints.

Here we have a recent top ranked winner, Chobe at Mountaineer on April 11. Notice that this horse had a huge Diamond Pace advantage
in a sprint. The Diamond Rating was 78, which gave the horse a 21 point advantage, huge. If you look at the morning line, notice that
the 15-1 has the L next to it, and that is a Trackmaster longshot indicator, a great sign.

On Wednesday, March 24, at Oaklawn Park, the Diamond System had a COLD $1487 Pick 3 in races 6, 7, 8. I've posted the ratings for races 6 and 7.
In the 6th, the top ranked horse won and paid $84.80. The 10 horse was scratched in this race, so the system actually had the $2,058 trifecta and
the $3247 superfecta with a simple key play 3 over 2, 6, 9. The winner, Cathywithac, had the best Diamond Speed rating of 123, the best Diamond
Rating of 119, and the best Formula Power of 90. In the next race, Tactical won and paid $18.60 and had was a Triple Diamond King, meaning that
it had the best Diamond Pace, Diamond Speed, and Diamond Rating. The horse had an 11 point Diamond Rating advantage. In the 8th race the top
ranked horse won and paid $5.00 for the COLD $1487 Pick 3.

ZENYATTA's AMAZING KICK RATING

How great is Zenyatta? Let's look at the Diamond and Formula Ratings for her last race on March 13. On the
printout, the best rating for late closing power is Formula Kick. The Kick rating ranks a horse's sustained closing
power, NOT JUST THE LAST QUARTER. Zenyatta's Kick Rating is 122 (based on her B.C. Classic win). This high
of a rating is unprecedented in a main track race. You will see 122 Kick Ratings in turf routes, especially in
the long races, such as 1 3/8 or 1 1/2 miles, but that's because of the slow paces in those races, plus, turf
courses are faster than dirt and synthetic tracks.

Zenyatta's 122 Kick Rating is sensational for a main track performance, especially for a mile and a quarter
race. Now look at her Diamond Energy rating of 34.3. With Diamond Energy, the higher the number, the
more late energy a horse has. However, the best way to use this rating is to find averages. For instance,
in a race like this, which was run at 9 furlongs, most winners are going to have an energy rating between
32.5 and 33.5. In 6f sprints, most winners are around :30 to :31. Although a high energy rating does indicate
a strong closer, too high of a rating usually means that the horse lags too far back. Zenyatta's ridiculously
high energy rating, which is substantially higher than the average winning energy rating for this distance
is an indication that she lags too far back to win the race. Basically what the energy rating is telling is,
this horse will be so far back that it will be virtually impossible for her to win this race.

If you think about the Breeders Cup Classic, her performance in that race was far better than most analysts
comprehend. Some people, such as track announcer Trevor Denman, did fully understand the brilliance
of the effort when he said in his historic call, "this is un-be-lievable, Zenyatta in a performance we'll never
forget, it looked impossible..."

Denman was right. Zenyatta broke flat-footed and was at least 16 lengths behind early on. According to the
Bris pps, the first call was rated a -11, meaning that it was 11 slower than par considering the track
variant, class, distance etc. So there was not a fast pace in front of her. There are very few horses that
could have won that race from the position Zenyatta was in. Secretariat could have won it. Maybe
Affirmed, Cigar, Citation, Man O War. The bottom line is, Zenyatta is without doubt one of the
fastest closing horses in the history of the sport, and quite possibly the fastest finisher ever.
We've been using this system for about 12 yearsnow and I don't recall ever seeing a 122 Kick Rating in a
main track race. Usually the top horses have Kick Ratings over 100, between 100 and 110. But Zenyatta is not
just another Grade I winner, and she is not just a great mare. She is one of the all-time great thoroughbreds.

On another note, look at the TM CR, which is the Trackmaster class rating, 123! Do you think that the
Breeders Cup Classic was a tough field? It had 10 Grade 1 winners in it, the winner of the Kentucky Derby
the winner of the Belmont Stakes, Gio Ponti, who won the Arlington Million and 6 straight GR1 races, 3 of
the best horses from Europe, etc. And let's not forget that the race was run at the classic distance of
a mile and a quarter. Her win in the Breeders Cup Classic was without doubt one of the most brilliant performances
in the history of thoroughbred racing.

In this race at Woodbine, below, Secret Trail had a Diamond Pace advantage of 15 points. Anything 7 points or better is
preferred. The Diamond Rating of 101 is only a 1 point advantage, but when a horse is a longshot top ranked horse,
you have to look at the overall picture. This  horse also had the best Formula Pace, and his Track CR (class) is
only 1 point below the top class of 79, and as you can see, higher than most of the horses in the race.

Once again The Diamond System out-picked me. I picked Big Brown, but after the scratch of Casino Drive,
the Diamond System had the $79 winner right on top.

At Arlington on Thursday, May 29, in the 3rd race, The Diamond System's automatic paceline
option T ranked Cartlets on top and he won and paid $100.60. In the consensus
box option (6), Cartlets was ranked 1st in Final Speed, Early Speed, Diamond Total,
and Consensus, or 4 of the 5 categories.

At Finger Lakes, on Monday, May 26, Apple Talk won and paid $77.00 and was the top rated Diamond System
pick in the 2nd race at Finger Lakes using automatic paceline option K, which gives you each horse's last two Diamond Ratings.
Apple Talk also had the L (noted under ML), which is a Trackmaster feature indicating that this horse fit a pattern that has
produced profitable longshot winners.

THOROUGHBRED DIAMOND SYSTEM TRACKMASTER  NAILS $83.50 TOP WINNER

Saturday, September 1, 2007

The Diamond System picked another $80 winner on top this week. If you keyed this horse on top in exactas and trifectas, it actually would've been an easy one to hit because the horse with the highest (119) Kick Rating finished 2nd and the morning line favorite, who was ranked 3rd,  finished 3rd. Kick Rating is almost as important as the Diamond Rating in Turf Routes. The 2nd place finisher also had the lowest (best) Diamond Speed, which is a combination of final time and late speed.  The exacta paid $518.00 and the trifecta paid $2564.00.

THOROUGHBRED DIAMOND SYSTEM BRIS VERSION NAILS $80.80 TOP WINNER

THOROUGHBRED DIAMOND PRINTOUTS for
Trackmaster Version and Bris Version

DIAMOND SYSTEM CONSENSUS MATRIX nails $16.20, $66.00, $14.40, $14.60, $5.40, and $29.40 WINNERS ON TOP!

Last year we added a new feature to the Diamond System, the Diamond System Consensus Matrix. This new feature actually takes 3 different handicapping methods, The Diamond System, The Formula Method, and velocity ratings, to produce a unique Consensus Box that is the most amazing LONGSHOT WINNER generator I've ever seen. In the printout below, you see the Consensus Matrix for Aqueduct, Saturday, February 4, 2006. The system picked 6 winners ON TOP including One Tough Dude $16.20, Napoleon T N T $66.00, What's Your Point $5.40, Wood Winner $14.40, Melodeeman $14.60, and Red Zipper $29.40. The COLD EARLY DOUBLE paid $320.50! The Matrix also had several exotic scores including the $9,616.00 PICK 4. The Matrix also had $154.00 and $286.00 Exactas, $1,264.00 and $1,741.00 Pick 3's, and a $1,193.00 Trifecta. And this is all in one day!

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2006 AQUEDUCT $9,616.00 PICK 4!

The printout you see below is an 8 1/2 by 11 page reduced and scanned for this webpage. This is a printout using option 6 (which is hidden) in the Trackmaster version 17.9.5 or higher of the Thoroughbred Diamond System. We kept this hidden (along with option 8) because it was in the experimental stage. When I say "hidden," I mean that we didn't tell users that it was there--it is not documented. After running several tests on it, I've decided to inform users of its place in the system. We've also decided to create option 6 in the Bris version, and in the new Daily Racing Form Formulator version which will soon be available. If you have the Trackmaster version and it is version 17.9.5 or higher, this should work. What you do is run the system using Automatic paceline option T (you can also run K or P but I've been using T for this particular printout). After you've run it, go back into the starting page and run it again, but when you get to ENTRY, instead of selecting option 2, type in 6 and hit enter. Make sure your printer is on because this screen is not viewable on your monitor.

What you get is below, a printout CONSENSUS BOX of FINAL SPEED, EARLY SPEED, and LATE SPEED. The one below is Keeneland, October 8, which was Saturday. Now let me inform you that these are not just DIAMOND or FORMULA ranked. This is an entirely new schematic we came up with. We basically created an artificial intelligence that ranks different types of handicapping formula. For instance, LATE SPEED uses the Formula Kick rating in conjunction with LP (3rd or final fraction). On your Diamond/Formula printouts and screens views, there is no LP. If you run option 8 you will see the actual new ratings.

I don't want to go into too much detail on what new ratings we included, but the idea was to try something new and blend several types of ratings together, such as Diamond Final, Formula Power, and AP (AVERAGE PACE). In doing this, we programmed the software to develop new feet-per-second type velocity ratings to add to the Diamond and Formula ratings that are already included. Then we created a way of putting the numbers together.

The reason why I am disclosing this previously "hidden" option, is that I love it. Last year Dexter and I were conversing and he suggested that we should try to do more with the numbers, and perhaps create some sort of master rating. We kicked it around a bit and I started to experiment on paper with a CONSENSUS FORMAT. It's still a work on progress (we may add some sort of Class category, and we're thinking of ranking the Final Consensus picks by number).

During the Keeneland meet, which is 3 days old as of this writing, option 6 has been amazing. As you can see in Saturday's printout below, FINAL SPEED had 5 winners on top at $3.40, $5.80, $8.80, $5.80, and $25.20. EARLY SPEED had 3 winners on top at $8.80, $17.00, and $25.20. And LATE SPEED had 2 winners on top at $5.80 and $22.80.

The amazing thing was the exotics. If you used the top 2 picks in each category in Pick 3's, you would've hit for $461.80, $2,017.40, $3,488.50, $528.20, and $345.00. If you used all 3 horses in each category in Pick 3's, you would've hit the same ones I just listed, plus the last pick 3 of the day, which paid $10,722.80.

And there was a lot more exotic winners including a cold $360.20 trifecta that FINAL SPEED had in the 10th.

Over the course of the first 3 days of the Keeneland meet so far, FINAL SPEED, which should be the strongest category, has been just that. After 29 races, FINAL SPEED had 10 winners on top including $25.80 and $36.80 winners, and produced a CLEAR PROFIT of $66.00 for $2.00 wagers, a 47% profit.

Interestingly enough, playing all 3 horses in each category in each race (which would actually be an $18.00 bet per race) to win produced a substantial profit of $114.80 or 22%.

I'm not saying that is the way to go, my assumption at this point is that there are better approaches. After a few months of looking at these printouts, I've noticed that LATE SPEED often completes the exacta or trifecta. In other words, LATE SPEED horses (usually closers) often plunk up for 2nd or 3rd. The interesting thing is that these LATE SPEED horses are often big longshots. You know how when you bet exactas or trifectas some horse comes out of nowhere at a big price and messes up your ticket? Well, that's precisely what LATE SPEED top picks have done. But, some of them have also won at huge prices.

Another pattern I've noticed is that the more the horse is listed the better chance it was to win the race. For instance, ELUSIVE JAZZ is ranked 2nd in Final Speed and 1st in Early Speed, and it won and paid $17.00. In the 10th race, LILA KAY'S ROSE is ranked 1st in both FINAL SPEED and EARLY SPEED, and it won and paid $25.20. Other multiple-ranked longshot horses that won and paid good prices over the first three days, on Sunday, October 9, EASY GRADES was ranked 1st in FINAL SPEED, and 3rd in both EARLY SPEED and LATE SPEED. Easy Grades won and paid $36.80. On opening day, Friday, October 7, in the 9th race, SHE SAYS IT BEST was ranked 1st on FINAL SPEED and 2nd on LATE SPEED, and paid $21.40.

More horses that were ranked more than once over this 3 day period and won include STATE OF STOCK $6.80, SUMMER BOOK $6.60, REGENT SPIRIT $7.80, ASI SEIMPRE $2.40, EVERYTHING GOOD $8.80, DAWN OF WAR $74.60(!), and INTERCONTINENTAL $3.60. DAWN OF WAR, the $74.60 winner, was ranked 3rd on FINAL SPEED and EARLY SPEED.

I'm going to start updating this site with more current DIAMOND printouts for both the thoroughbred and Harness versions.

As for this new wrinkle, it's good. It's great for spotting LIVE LONGSHOTS, especially for exotic wagering. I don't think most handicappers could come up with these horses using the old methods. The problem is, we tend to think too rationally, and we would dismiss many of these LONGSHOT winners because they simply don't look that strong to the naked eye. But I'm finding more and more that speed, pace, and acceleration is really the key when you have the right formulas.
